South African distance-running sensation Tayla Kavanagh has rewritten the record books for the second time in a matter of weeks, storming to a new national 10km record at the Brasov Running Festival in Romania on Sunday.
Beyond securing the national milestone, Kavanagh chopped an impressive 36 seconds off her previous personal best of 31:26. She navigated the high-speed course trailing a dominant East African contingent, with Ethiopia’s Asefu Abreha claiming the victory in 30:16. Aynadis Mebratu (30:19) and Yenenesh Shimket Ademas (30:21) rounded out an all-Ethiopian podium, while Djibouti’s Samiya Hassan Nour took fourth in 30:37.

Kavanagh’s breakthrough in Romania cements her status as one of South Africa’s most formidable road runners. Just last month, she showcased her superb form by setting a new national 5km record. Competing at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, she fought tenaciously to secure fourth position with a time of 14:51, missing out on a global bronze medal by a single second
Following her Copenhagen performance, Kavanagh reflected on her upward trajectory: “I’ve had a really strong season and to put this performance out there today and run a national record is so special. I’m so happy with it and so unbelievably grateful to be here, to represent South Africa.”
With her consecutive national records in the 5km and 10km events, Kavanagh has firmly established herself at the forefront of South African women’s distance running
