GLASGOW, SCOTLAND – After a promising opening day at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Day 2 of the track and field programme brought high drama, heart-stopping margins, and sheer heartbreak for South Africa’s leading sprinters at Scotstoun Stadium.

Heartbreak in the Semifinals

The evening session kicked off with immense anticipation for South Africa’s sprint trio in the men’s 100m semifinals. However, the atmosphere quickly turned tense. In Semi-Final 2, rising star Bradley Nkoana suffered a crushing blow. Following a flawless opening round on Day 1, Nkoana was disqualified due to a devastating false start, ending his individual campaign in Glasgow prematurely.

Despite the setback, his teammates stepped up to the plate. Gift Leotlela looked incredibly sharp, taking victory in Semi-Final 3 with a controlled time of 10.02s (Wind: +1.1) to secure an automatic qualifying spot.

Meanwhile, Cheswill Johnson had to endure a nervous wait. Finishing fourth in Semi-Final 1 with a time of 10.05s (Wind: 0.0), his performance was just enough to snatch a fastest non-automatic qualifying spot, ensuring two green and gold vests would line up in the showpiece final.

The 100m Final: Margins of a Millisecond

Under the stadium floodlights, the men’s 100m final delivered pure fireworks. Aided by a favourable tailwind (+1.3), the race was staggeringly fast.

Leotlela, drawing Lane 6, produced a phenomenal run. He surged through the finish line in a blistering season’s best of 9.91s, but in a desperately tight finish, it was only enough for fourth place. He missed out on the bronze medal by just 0.01 seconds, the slimmest of margins, to Nigeria’s Kayinsola Ajayi (9.90s).

Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme claimed the gold, destroying the field with a Games Record and National Record time of 9.83s. Australia’s Lachlan Kennedy took silver with a personal best of 9.85s.

Johnson, starting out wide in Lane 8, couldn’t quite match his semifinal pace, finishing eighth in 10.13s in what was still a commendable finals appearance.

Looking Ahead: A Blockbuster Wednesday for Team SA

The athletics programme shows no signs of slowing down, with Day 3 promising a bumper schedule for South African fans. No fewer than nine Team SA athletes will take to the arena tomorrow, featuring a mix of track, field, and para-athletics events:

  • Ashley Erasmus will battle it out in the Women’s Shot Put Final.
  • Prudence Sekgodiso, after safely navigating her heats, lines up for the Women’s 800m Semifinal.
  • Yane van der Merwe looks for glory in the Women’s Discus Throw F42-44/F61-64 Final.
  • Collen Mahlalela hunts a medal in the Men’s 100m T47 Final.
  • Aiden Smith begins his campaign in the Shot Put Qualifying Round.
  • Tshepo Tshite races in the Men’s 1 Mile Round 1.
  • Mvuyo Moss hits the bend in the Men’s 200m Round 1.
  • Sabelo Dhlamini takes on the barriers in the Men’s 400m Hurdles Round 1.
