The South African Sports Confederation, Olympic and Paralympic Committee (SASCOC) officially launched the countdown to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Wednesday evening, unveiling a highly competitive 112-member multi-sport contingent during a glamorous event at Olympic House in Johannesburg.
With under a month left until the opening ceremony on July 23, the announcement also doubled as the official reveal of Team SA’s green and gold uniform, designed and sponsored by technical partner Mr Price Sport under its Maxed Elite performance label.
While South Africa will contest all 10 sports on the streamlined 2026 program, the spotlight firmly falls on a powerhouse Athletics and Para-Athletics collective. A total of 30 track and field stars (23 in able-bodied events and 7 in para-sports) have been selected to spearhead the nation’s medal hunt in Scotland—a venue that holds fond memories, given South Africa’s historic 40-medal haul when Glasgow last hosted the Games in 2014.
Sprinters Form the Spearhead
South Africa heads into Glasgow with what shapes up to be one of its most lethal sprinting lineups in modern Commonwealth history.
Defending 100m silver medalist Akani Simbine brings elite major-championship experience to the squad. Simbine, who is one of nine returning athletics squad members from the Birmingham 2022 team, will anchor a blistering men’s short-sprint pool that includes Gift Leotlela, Olympic relay silver medalist Bradley Nkoana, and the versatile Cheswill Johnson.
The momentum carries smoothly into the elongated sprints. Sinesipho Dambile enters the 200m frame on the back of electric form on the international circuit, while Zakithi Nene and Lythe Pillay provide formidable depth in a world-class 400m department.
Middle-Distance & Field Stars Peaking at the Right Time
On the middle-distance front, the women’s contingent boasts incredible momentum:
- Prudence Sekgodiso: Running a string of consistent personal best times over both 800m and 1500m on the global circuit over the last month, Sekgodiso looks to be hitting peak condition at the exact right moment.
- Karabo More: Fresh off claiming the South African women’s mile championship title, More adds serious tactical firepower.
- Tayla Kavanagh: Following a sensational national championship showing where she clocked the second-fastest time ever by a South African, alongside a victory in the Cape Town Marathon 10km, Kavanagh arrives in elite road-racing form.
In the hurdles, Rogail Joseph arrives as a heavy favorite after successfully defending her African continental crown earlier this year, alongside Marione Fourie, who has been consistently setting explosive times on the European circuit. Meanwhile, field events look equally robust. Javelin specialist Douw Smit has routinely breached the 80-meter mark on the Continental Tour this season, while Aiden Smith looks to add a Commonwealth podium to his African Championship gold and World Student Games title.
The field events also feature the highly anticipated international return of Jo-Ané du Plessis, who will be eager to leave her mark following a long-awaited recovery from injury.
Veteran Force Inspires Para-Athletics Squad
The seven-athlete para-athletics squad features seasoned world-class competitors hungry for the podium. Track veterans Sheryl James and Liezel Gouws will guide the women’s charge, while Jaco Smit will leverage his extensive multi-sport games experience to challenge for a spot on the dais.
Rising star Collen Mahlalela is also confirmed fit and firing. Despite a minor hamstring scare at the Simbine Classic earlier this season, Mahlalela confirmed his rehabilitation was fully complete and his focus remains squarely on delivering a peak performance in Glasgow.
Financial Motivation & The Official Squad
To further elevate the competitive stakes, SASCOC confirmed a tier-structured financial incentive model for the Games. In individual disciplines, gold medalists will secure R100,000 (with R15,000 rewarded to their coach), while silver and bronze achievements yield R50,000 and R25,000 respectively. For relays and team events, a gold medal secures R25,000 per athlete and R15,000 for the coaching staff.
