The Man in the Arena: Lerena’s Relentless Return to Cruiserweight

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - OCTOBER 13: Kevin Lerena prepares for his WBC International Cruiserweight Title bout against Scott Forrest at Smith's Boxing Gym on October 13, 2026 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Tonight, the talking stops. When Kevin “Two Guns” Lerena steps under the lights at the Sandton Convention Centre for Knockout Chaos 3: The Return, it will mark the culmination of a gruelling five-month physical and ideological transformation. Stripping away over 16 kilograms, from a heavyweight peak of 107kg down to the 90.7kg cruiserweight limit, is a brutal act of discipline. But for the 34-year-old South African, shedding the weight was never just about a belt. It was about rediscovering the fire.

Opposing him for the vacant WBC International cruiserweight title is Scotland’s Scott Forrest, an opponent Lerena actively requested. When promoters tabled a shortlist featuring a technical boxer and a spoiling fighter, Lerena rejected the easier routes. He wanted the man who would drag him into the trenches.

“The boxer was an easy win for me; the fighter was a spoiler,” Lerena explained this week. “Scott Forrest, I said I want him. He’s strong, he’s explosive, and I want the physical, hard fight”.

It is a classic clash of boxing backgrounds. Forrest arrives with a decorated amateur pedigree that includes a Youth World Championship gold and a Commonwealth Games bronze medal. Lerena, by his own admission, never had a single amateur fight. “Boxing chose me,” he reflected recently, looking back on a 15-year professional journey guided entirely by veteran trainer Peter Smith. That lack of amateur foundation never stopped Lerena from venturing into the heavyweight division to face Daniel Dubois and Lawrence Okolie at Wembley, nor did it prevent him from capturing the WBC bridgerweight world title. He is a Cinderella story forged in heavy leather.

Tonight’s bout, however, carries a different kind of weight. Lerena isn’t just the main event; he is the architect of the evening. Headlining a card promoted by his own Aquila Boxing Promotions, Lerena has evolved from an outsider into one of South Africa’s premier boxing mentors and promoters.

For Lerena, building Aquila Boxing Promotions is about safeguarding the future of the sport locally. “This is what I’m here to do for the sport—is create an opportunity for other fighters, to create an opportunity for my teammates,” he noted. He understands the brutal economics of the fight game, famously remarking that while championships are prestigious, you “cannot buy a car with a belt.” His ultimate motivation remains securing the future for his wife and children, while ensuring the next generation of South African fighters has a world-class platform to showcase their talent.

But make no mistake, the promotional suit hasn’t softened the fighter. At the official WBC weigh-in, a dialed-in Lerena hit the scales ready for war, promising his loyal “Lerena Army” the absolute best version of himself. Both men know exactly what kind of fight awaits. Forrest has openly stated that neither man takes a backward step, predicting a night of heavy slugging. Lerena embraces the violence to come, calling it a “war of attrition”.

“I will become cruiserweight world champion again,” Lerena promised. Tonight at the Sandton Convention Centre, he takes the first massive step back to the mountaintop.
