HORSENS, DENMARK — Team South Africa’s demanding return to the BWF Uber Cup Finals continued on Sunday as they faced another formidable Asian opponent, succumbing to a 5-0 defeat against Malaysia in their second Group B clash.
Following a harsh but vital 5-0 “baptism of fire” against tournament heavyweights Japan on Saturday—which marked their first appearance at this prestigious event in 14 years—the sole African representatives once again stepped onto the court to test their mettle. While the scoreboard reflected another clean sweep, the South African squad showed undeniable flashes of resilience and adaptation against a Malaysian side brimming with momentum.
Malaysia, coming off a narrow 3-2 victory over Türkiye in their opener, asserted their dominance early. In the opening singles rubber, South Africa’s Johanita Scholtz (World No. 160) faced off against the highly-rated Karupathevan Letshanaa (World No. 34). Despite a valiant effort from the South African, the relentless pace and precision of Letshanaa proved too much, with the Malaysian claiming a 21-6, 21-10 victory in 22 minutes.
The second and third singles matches highlighted the vast gap in international experience between the two nations. Chloe Lai (World No. 441) encountered World No. 38 Wong Ling Ching, going down 21-8, 21-4 in a brisk 20 minutes. Following her, Elme de Villiers (World No. 471) showed promising fight early in her match against World No. 90 Siti Zulaikha but was ultimately outplayed 21-11, 21-5.
The undeniable highlight of the day for Team SA came in the first doubles rubber. The South African pairing of Amy Ackerman and Johanita Scholtz put together a fiercely competitive performance against Ong Xin Yee and Carmen Ting. In a gruelling 31-minute battle that featured the longest rallies of the tie (72 total points played), Ackerman and Scholtz pushed the Malaysians hard, ultimately losing 21-16, 21-14. It was South Africa’s highest points tally in a single match during the tournament so far, showcasing their ability to adjust to the tactical demands of elite international doubles play.
In the final match of the day, the South African duo of Elme de Villiers and Anri Schoonees fell 21-12, 21-5 to Chong Jie Yu and Low Zi Yu, wrapping up the tie.
Overall Tournament Picture
For South Africa, this Uber Cup campaign is about far more than just the final results. Drawn into a heavy-hitting Group B with three nations possessing deep badminton pedigrees (Japan, Malaysia, and Türkiye), the tournament serves as an invaluable stepping stone. After more than a decade away from this stage, sharing the court with top-100 ranked superstars exposes the South African players to the punishing speed, fitness levels, and tactical nuance required at the absolute highest tier of the sport.
With Japan and Malaysia both flexing their muscles and likely securing the top spots in the group, the heavyweights have dominated the headlines. However, Team SA will take the hard-fought lessons and gradual improvements from the weekend into their final group stage challenge.
The South Africans are now set to face Türkiye today. With Türkiye having suffered a narrow defeat to Malaysia earlier in the weekend, they present a dangerous but slightly more level opponent for Team SA. South Africa will be hunting for those elusive first set victories and match points, aiming to conclude their campaign on a high note and cement a strong foundation for the future of women’s badminton on the continent.
