South African middle-distance runners Tshepo Tshite and Prudence Sekgodiso delivered strong performances at the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting in Liévin, France, setting national records and continuing their steady progress on the international indoor circuit stage.
Tshite Sets New National Indoor Mile Record
Tshepo Tshite improved the South African indoor mile record with a time of 3:54.10, surpassing the previous mark of 3:54.27 set by Clyde Colenso in 2001. Competing in a high-quality field, Tshite finished fifth in a race won by Norwegian Jakob Ingebrigtsen, who set a new world record of 3:45.14.
Tshite’s performance builds on his 1500m short-track record of 3:35.06 set in Toruń last year, underlining his consistency in middle-distance running. Reflecting on his race, he acknowledged the achievement while focusing on further improvements: “Breaking records is a good milestone, but I’m working towards greater goals this season.”

Sekgodiso Matches National Indoor 800m Record
Olympic finalist Prudence Sekgodiso equalled her South African 800m indoor record with a time of 1:59.88, securing second place behind Ethiopia’s Tsige Duguma (1:59.02). The result matches the national record Sekgodiso set just a week earlier at the Indoor Meeting Karlsruhe in Germany.
Sekgodiso’s recent performances demonstrate her growing presence on the international circuit, and she expressed satisfaction with her efforts: “Happy with my second position. Matching the national record again is a positive step.” With the outdoor season approaching, she remains focused on further progress.

A Positive Outlook for South African Middle-Distance Running
The achievements of both athletes have been met with praise from Athletics South Africa President James Moloi, who stated, “A national record is a milestone for any athlete, and it reflects their progress at this stage of the season.”
With the World Championships and other key competitions ahead, the recent performances of Tshite and Sekgodiso highlight their potential to remain competitive on the global stage. Their steady improvement suggests promising results for South African middle-distance running in the coming months.
