NEW YORK — South African tennis ace Lloyd Harris saw his spirited 2026 US Open run come to an agonizing end on Court 17 on Wednesday night, falling 7–6(1), 3–6, 6–7(4), 4–6 to Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in an electrifying second-round battle that stretched across three hours and 27 minutes.

The 29-year-old Capetonian threw everything in his arsenal at the former World No. 3, firing 13 aces, painting the lines with 37 winners, and winning 77% of his first-serve points in a contest decided by the finest of margins.

Set-by-Set Breakdown

  • Set 1 (7–6 to Harris): The opening set was a masterclass in heavy serving and composure under fire. After trading early breaks at the business end of the set, Harris played a near-flawless tiebreak. The South African jumped to a commanding 6–1 lead before punctuating the opener with an authoritative forehand winner to take the tiebreak 7–1.
  • Set 2 (6–3 to Tsitsipas): Tsitsipas elevated his returning aggression in the second, putting immense pressure on Harris’s delivery. The Greek star converted two service breaks in the second half of the set, levelling the match behind heavy baseline hitting and net rushing.

  • Set 3 (7–6 to Tsitsipas): A lung-busting, 70-minute arm-wrestle. Harris showed nerves of steel, holding through multiple deuce games and fighting off set points at 5–6 to force another tiebreak. However, Tsitsipas seized the crucial mini-break at 4–4 before closing out the breaker 7–4.
  • Set 4 (6–4 to Tsitsipas): Harris dug deep physically in the fourth, saving multiple break points in an epic, five-deuce Game 3. But with fatigue setting in after four qualifying and main draw matches over the past nine days, Tsitsipas struck the decisive blow in Game 9 to break for 5–4, serving it out in the next game to seal a brutal contest.

A Resurgent New York Campaign

While the defeat brings heartbreak, Harris leaves Flushing Meadows with his reputation as one of the world’s most dangerous unseeded hard-court contenders firmly restored.

Having battled through three gruelling qualifying rounds, including a 12–10 final-set tiebreak against Henrique Rocha, and a dominant straight-sets dismissal of Jack Kennedy in the opening round, Harris pushed an elite Grand Slam finalist to the absolute brink. His 142 total points won compared to Tsitsipas’s 150 underscored just how close the Capetonian came to another famous Grand Slam upset on American soil.

With his serve firing, his forehand dictating, and his competitive fire on full display, Harris’s North American hard-court swing marks a significant, positive turning point in his resurgence on the ATP Tour.
