Pivotal Bowling Performance
In a thrilling encounter in Benoni, the Proteas women’s team showcased exceptional bowling prowess, securing a sensational 11-run victory over New Zealand in the fifth and final T20 match on Sunday. Proteas skipper Laura Wolvaardt praised her team’s bowling department for their pivotal role in snatching the triumph.
The dynamic duo of Masabata Klaas and Nadine de Klerk played a pivotal role in restricting New Zealand’s batting lineup, leading to their remarkable collapse from a seemingly strong position of 130-2 to a disappointing 144-8, falling short by 11 runs of the modest 156-run target. The Proteas managed to level the five-match T20 series 1-1, following the team’s earlier success in the ODI series, which they clinched 2-1.

Crucial wickets at key moments
The Proteas set the tone early with the dismissal of Kate Anderson for 11, courtesy of a well-executed delivery by Masabata Klaas, caught by Anneke Bosch at cover. Despite a formidable 97-run partnership between Bates and Kerr that initially threatened the Proteas’ hold, all-rounder Nadine de Klerk’s crucial wicket of Bates, trapped LBW for 45 off 42 deliveries, marked a turning point in the game.
Kerr, shouldering the responsibility for the New Zealand innings, appeared to be guiding her team to victory, until a sudden collapse, triggered by Klaas’s dismissal of Kerr for a well-played 61 off 41 balls, brought the Proteas back into contention. In a dramatic turn of events, New Zealand lost their momentum, losing key wickets in the crucial final two overs, with skipper Sophie Devine falling for 8, Maddy Green bowled for 1, and Brooke Halliday run out for 1, among others.
Great depth bowling
The Proteas’ bowling trio of Klaas, De Klerk, and Khaka employed skillful yorkers to further dismantle the New Zealand batting line-up, leaving the visitors floundering and frustrated. With figures of three for 26 and three for 24 respectively, Klaas and De Klerk emerged as the standout performers for the Proteas.
South Africa overcame early pressure
Earlier in the match, after being put in to bat first, the Proteas faced a challenging New Zealand bowling attack, leading to a slow start. Skipper Laura Wolvaardt’s aggressive play initially showed promise, but a delivery from Lea Tahuhu dismissed her for 24 off 20 balls. Despite a brief 60-run partnership between Tazmin Brits and Anneke Bosch, the Proteas struggled to build substantial partnerships as New Zealand’s bowling unit maintained consistent pressure.
Tazmin Brits emerged as the top scorer with 45 off 38 balls, including five fours and a six, before falling to Tahuhu’s skillful bowling. The late contributions from Sune Luus, who remained unbeaten with 36 off 23 deliveries, helped the Proteas reach a competitive total of 155-5 on the challenging Benoni pitch.
Benoni Crowd witnessed some spectacular cricket
The Proteas’ impressive display of resilience and skill in both batting and bowling aspects marked a significant milestone in their efforts to secure a level series T20 win against New Zealand, leaving the Benoni crowd delighted with an exhilarating display of cricketing prowess.
