Bochum, Germany – July 24, 2025
South Africa’s Aiden Smith produced a dramatic and composed final throw to secure gold in the men’s shot put at the 2025 FISU World University Games, turning the competition on its head in the closing moments of the final.
Smith was sitting in fifth place heading into his sixth and final attempt, knowing he would need something special to reach the podium. Rising to the moment, he launched a powerful throw of 20.25 metres, a mark that immediately lifted him into first place, overtaking a tightly contested field.
The final moments of the event were tense, as several athletes still had their last attempts to come. Smith had to wait anxiously on the sidelines to see if anyone would surpass his mark. When it was confirmed that his throw would stand as the winning distance, the 20-year-old erupted with emotion.
In a moment of celebration that reflected both relief and joy, Smith grabbed a South African flag from his coach—who was equally animated on the sidelines—and jogged the length of the 100m track with officials in pursuit, drawing cheers and a standing ovation from the crowd.
Speaking after the event, Smith shared that he had come to the Games with one goal in mind.
“I came here for gold,” he said. “After my fifth throw, I knew I had more to give, and I just had to reset mentally. I took a breath, focused, and gave it everything I had.”
In a brief interview earlier in the week, Smith had hinted at high expectations for himself, and his performance lived up to that ambition. His final effort was not just a season’s best—it was a statement of intent from an athlete still early in his career.
Following his victory, Smith made it clear that he isn’t done yet.
“You’ll still see me for the next four years at least,” he said with a smile, hinting at his plans to return and defend his title in future editions of the Games.
The silver medal went to Jialiang Xing of China, who threw 20.08 metres, while Italy’s Riccardo Ferrara took bronze with 19.91 metres.
