CAPE TOWN — International hockey returns to South African soil this June, as the iconic Hartleyvale Stadium in Cape Town prepares to host the 2026 FIH Hockey Men’s Nations Cup. Running from 11 to 20 June, the tournament promises thrilling action with significant implications for the global hockey landscape.
While the ultimate prize of the Nations Cup is a coveted promotion to the 2026–27 FIH Hockey Pro League, this year’s edition carries even more weight. With the prestigious Hockey World Cup looming just around the corner in August, the Nations Cup serves as a vital crucible for participating teams. For the South African men’s national team, it is an invaluable opportunity to test their mettle against world-class opponents, fine-tune their tactical setups, and solidify team dynamics ahead of the sport’s showpiece event later this year.
The nine-nation tournament features a formidable lineup. South Africa will battle it out in Pool B alongside France, Ireland, and the USA. Meanwhile, Pool A boasts a strong international contingent comprising New Zealand, Malaysia, Korea, Japan, and Scotland.
As Cape Town gets ready to host this World Cup-caliber hockey event, the call has been made for the local sports community to turn Hartleyvale into a fortress. South Africa will play all of their Pool B matches in prime-time evening slots, offering fans the perfect opportunity to pack the stands and rally behind the national team.
The host nation’s campaign kicks off with a blockbuster opening fixture against France on Thursday, 11 June at 19:00. This will be followed by crucial weekend and mid-week clashes against the USA on Saturday, 13 June (17:00), and Ireland on Tuesday, 16 June (19:00). The tournament will culminate in a dramatic finals day on Saturday, 20 June.
South African Hockey President Deon Morgan highlighted the significance of the event, both for the players and the fans.
“Hosting the FIH Hockey Men’s Nations Cup in Cape Town is a significant moment for South African Hockey,” Morgan stated in an official release. “It gives our players the opportunity to compete against outstanding international opposition at home, and it gives our supporters the chance to be part of something special. We want Hartleyvale to be full, loud and proudly South African as we welcome the world to Cape Town.”
For South African fans, this is a rare chance to witness elite international hockey on home turf and give the national squad a massive psychological boost before they depart for the World Cup in August.
