Bloemfontein – South Africa took a decisive step towards securing their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a commanding 3–0 victory over neighbours Lesotho at the Free State Stadium on Friday night. The result cemented Bafana Bafana’s grip on top spot in Group C, where they now hold a five-point advantage.
Early Setback, Early Response
Coach Hugo Broos’ side suffered a scare in the opening minutes when Nyiko Mobbie was forced off with a head injury, replaced by Zuko Mdunyelwa after just six minutes. But far from unsettling the hosts, it sparked them into action.
On 16 minutes, Mohau Nkota showed the composure of a seasoned international when he steered Aubrey Modiba’s lofted cross beyond Sekhoane Moerane to open the scoring with his first goal for the national team. It was the highlight of a scrappy first half littered with fouls, though Bafana went into the break deservedly 1–0 ahead.
Foster Delivers, Appollis Seals It
South Africa tightened their grip after halftime. In the 63rd minute, Modiba’s powerful drive was parried by Moerane, only for Lyle Foster to react quickest and stab home the rebound.
Barely four minutes later, Foster turned provider, slipping a clever ball into the path of Oswin Appollis, who finished low and clinically for 3–0. The quickfire double ended the contest, allowing Broos’ men to manage the game comfortably through the closing stages.
Lesotho’s Resistance Fades
The Crocodiles battled gamely, with Motebang Sera testing Ronwen Williams from distance in the second half, but they lacked cutting edge. South Africa’s backline, reshuffled again after Thabo Moloisane’s injury, remained composed and gave little away.
By the Numbers
South Africa dominated possession (68%) and completed nearly double the number of passes (582 to 270), underlining their control. Foster and Appollis were particularly effective in the final third, where Bafana enjoyed 55 entries compared to Lesotho’s 49.
What It Means
The victory keeps Bafana in pole position to clinch automatic qualification, with Benin moving into second place after defeating Zimbabwe. However, a looming FIFA disciplinary ruling over Teboho Mokoena’s earlier ineligible appearance still casts a shadow over the campaign.
Up next, South Africa will host continental giants Nigeria in Bloemfontein on Tuesday, in what promises to be a pivotal clash in Group C. Lesotho, meanwhile, face Benin in Abidjan.
