The Springboks overcame a spirited Scottish fightback to secure a 42-28 victory in a pulsating second-round Nations Championship clash at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday. In a match that produced 10 tries and relentless edge-of-the-seat drama, a youthful and much-changed South African side demonstrated their depth and trademark physicality.
Despite defensive lapses that will undoubtedly give coach Rassie Erasmus plenty to review, the Boks ultimately outmuscled their opponents to remain unbeaten in the inaugural tournament, improving to 2-0 following last week’s triumph over England.
A Tale of Two Halves
The Springboks burst out of the blocks in front of a passionate Pretoria crowd, establishing a 14-0 lead inside the opening 20 minutes. Scrumhalf Embrose Papier, playing his first Test since 2018, sent Loftus into a frenzy when he hopped over a ruck and darted 25 metres to open the scoring with his first try in green and gold. Just two minutes later, No. 8 Evan Roos picked up from the base of a ruck to crash over for the Boks’ second.
However, Scotland refused to capitulate. Capitalizing on a penalty and a dominant pick-and-go sequence, Matt Fagerson forced his way over for the visitors’ first try. Shortly before the break, slick passing allowed winger Kyle Rowe to cross the whitewash, allowing the visitors to level the scores at 14-14 going into the sheds.
The Green and Gold Blitz
South Africa emerged in the second half with renewed intensity, leveraging their set-piece dominance to turn the screws on the Scottish defence. The Boks unleashed a devastating scoring blitz, initiated by an Elrigh Louw try in the 57th minute. Damian Willemse sliced through a gap shortly after, and replacement prop Zachary Porthen muscled his way over in the 65th minute to suddenly establish a commanding 35-14 lead.
Scotland, showing immense resolve, launched a late comeback with rapid-fire tries from replacements Josh Bayliss and Ben White, narrowing the deficit to a precarious seven points with 10 minutes remaining. But as the pressure mounted, veteran centre Jesse Kriel broke the line in the 77th minute to score a magnificent solo try, effectively slamming the door shut on the Scottish resurgence.
New Blood Shines
Erasmus opted to rotate his squad heavily for this fixture, blooding several inexperienced players. The gambit paid off handsomely, with young flanker Paul de Villiers delivering an outstanding performance in the loose trio alongside Pieter-Steph du Toit and Evan Roos. Handre Pollard was flawless off the tee, converting all five of his attempts before being replaced by Quan Horn, who added the final conversion.
While Scotland’s attacking enterprise was highly commendable, South Africa’s sheer power and depth off the bench proved to be the deciding factor. The Springboks will now head to Durban next weekend to wrap up their July Nations Championship fixtures against Wales.
