GLASGOW — Team South Africa’s phenomenal momentum in the pool continued unabated on Day 3 of the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Mirroring their success from the first two days, the national swimming squad secured another three medals, one gold, one silver, and one bronze, bringing their total aquatic medal tally to an impressive nine in just three days.

Once again, it was backstroke sensation Pieter Coetze who headlined the evening, delivering another record-breaking performance to secure his second individual gold of the Games.

Coetze Completes the Backstroke Double

Following his dominance in the 50m event, Pieter Coetze proved untouchable in the Men’s 200m Backstroke Final. Showcasing incredible endurance and underwater speed, Coetze powered to the wall in a blistering 1:54.22 to claim the gold medal.

Not only did the time comfortably beat England’s Oliver Morgan (1:56.44) and Luke Greenbank (1:56.58), but it also shattered the Commonwealth Games Record, cementing Coetze as the undisputed king of the backstroke events in Glasgow.

Canny Claims Silver in Breaststroke Thriller

The Women’s 100m Breaststroke Final was a showcase of South African depth, featuring three Protea swimmers in the eight-lane showdown. Aimee Canny led the South African charge, producing a spectacular swim to secure the silver medal. Canny touched the wall in 1:06.19, finishing agonizingly close, just 0.12 seconds, behind Scotland’s Angharad Evans, who took gold in 1:06.07.

Compatriots Kaylene Corbett and Rebecca Meder also put in strong shifts in the highly competitive final, finishing 6th (1:07.61) and 7th (1:07.68), respectively.

Nel Grabs Bronze in the 100m Backstroke

Olivia Nel ensured the South African flag was raised for a third time on the evening, delivering a brilliant performance in the Women’s 100m Backstroke Final. Nel clocked a time of 1:00.09 to secure a well-deserved bronze medal, finishing behind the dominant Canadian Kylie Masse (58.77) and Australia’s Iona Alexandra Anderson (58.71).

Semi-Final Success Sets Up an Exciting Day 4

Beyond the finals, Team SA’s sprinters successfully navigated their semi-finals to book crucial lanes for tomorrow’s medal events.

The Men’s 50m Breaststroke promises to be a thrilling final for South African fans. Michael Houlie laid down a massive marker, winning his semi-final in a rapid 26.61 to qualify fastest. He will be joined by Chris Smith, who touched second in his respective semi-final with a time of 27.01.

In the Women’s 100m Butterfly, Erin Gallagher, already a silver medallist at these Games, booked her spot in the final after clocking 57.94 to finish third in her heat. Teammate Dune Coetzee (1:00.70) missed out on progression in a highly competitive second semi-final.

Finally, Caitlin de Lange advanced to the Women’s 100m Freestyle Final, securing her qualification with a solid 55.03 finish in her semi-final heat.

With nine medals already in the bag and a strong contingent of finalists ready for Day 4, Team South Africa continues to prove they are an aquatic powerhouse in Glasgow.
