(Glasgow, Scotland) — As Day 3 of the 2026 Commonwealth Games concluded, Team South Africa experienced a session defined by thrilling tie-breaks, hard-fought rounds, and sudden setbacks. While the spotlight often shifts across the sprawling multi-sport event, the focus narrowed onto the greens, the ring, and the lifting platform for the final slate of South African fixtures. Here is a comprehensive look at how our athletes fared across Lawn Bowls, Boxing, and Weightlifting.

Masterclass on the Greens: Lawn and Para Bowls

Team South Africa showcased immense resilience and tactical precision at SEC Hall 3, delivering some of the day’s most gripping performances in Lawn Bowls.

In the Women’s Pairs (Section B), the duo of Thabelo Muvhango and skip Jacqui Janse van Rensburg were in formidable form, securing back-to-back victories. They opened their account against England with a dominant 9-0 first set. Although the English pair rallied to edge the second set 4-3, the South Africans held their nerve under pressure to clinch the deciding one-end tie-break 1-0. They carried that momentum into their Round 5 match against Malta, delivering a flawless straight-sets victory (7-0, 8-5) to cap off a perfect session.

The Men’s Singles saw a much tighter affair. Wayne Rittmuller went toe-to-toe with New Zealand’s Shannon McIlroy in a tense Round 5 clash. Rittmuller set the pace early, taking the first set 8-5, but McIlroy mirrored that exact scoreline in the second set to force a decider. In a nail-biting tie-break, the New Zealander managed to steal the solitary point, handing Rittmuller a narrow 2-1 defeat.

Meanwhile, the Para Mixed Pairs (B2-B3) squad authored the comeback story of the day. Facing New Zealand, Princess Schroeder and Keith Orrell, guided by directors Graham Ward and Trevor Freeman, found themselves completely overwhelmed in the first set, dropping it 9-1. However, demonstrating the fighting spirit synonymous with South African sport, they entirely recalibrated their strategy. Controlling the board, they took the second set 4-2 before snatching the decisive tie-break point (1-0) to win the match 2-1.

Boxing: Sigwela Bows Out in the Round of 16

Over at SEC Hall 5, the boxing ring hosted a gruelling all-African clash in the Men’s 55kg division. South Africa’s Masibulele Sigwela faced off against Zambia’s Mwengo Mwale in a highly physical bout that ultimately ended in disappointment for the South African corner.

Mwale dictated the early tempo, cleanly taking the first round on all five judges’ scorecards (10-9). Sigwela increased his work rate and pressed the action in the second round, doing enough to sway one judge in his favour (9-10), but struggled to break Mwale’s rhythm entirely across the panel. Both fighters received a one-point deduction for infractions in what became a messy, gritty contest, but the Zambian finished strong to unanimously take the third round.

Ultimately, Mwale secured a win on points with a 4-0 decision. Four judges scored the bout 29-27 in favour of the Zambian, while the fifth scored it a 28-28 draw, effectively eliminating Sigwela from the tournament.

Weightlifting: Early Exit for Snyman

Team South Africa’s campaign on the weightlifting platform ended in unfortunate circumstances. Competing in the Men’s 65kg final, Zach Snyman started with solid promise during the Snatch phase, successfully clearing 105kg on his first two attempts. He narrowly missed his third attempt at 110kg but still held a respectable baseline heading into the latter half of the competition.

However, before the Clean & Jerk segment could commence, Snyman was forced to withdraw. Unable to register a total score, he finished with a Did Not Finish (DNF) classification. For broader context on the podium, the event was ultimately won by Malaysia’s Aznil Bin Bidin Muhamad, who dominated the field to secure gold with a Games Record total of 299kg.

While the day brought a mix of triumphs and early exits, the resilience displayed by Team South Africa, particularly the composure shown under pressure to secure those crucial tie-break bowls victories, remains a testament to their competitive pedigree on the international stage.
