JINGSHAN, CHINA — South Africa’s Lloyd Harris has captured the ATP Challenger 100 Jingshan Open title in breathtaking fashion, pulling off a monumental comeback to defeat Italy’s Mattia Bellucci 1–6, 6–3, 7–6(4) on Sunday.
In an absorbing, high-intensity championship duel lasting two hours and 29 minutes, the 29-year-old Capetonian showed remarkable poise and steel under fire, staring down two championship points in the deciding set before storming through to claim the silverware.
The victory represents Harris’s second Challenger crown of the season, following his triumph in Brownsburg in August, and firmly cements his soaring resurgence after his quarter-final run at the ATP 250 Chengdu Open just seven days ago.
Tournament Path to the Final
Entering Jingshan as the sixth seed, Harris navigated a gruelling draw, dropping only a single set on his way to the championship round:
- Round of 32: def. Alexis Galarneau (CAN) 6–2, 6–3
- Round of 16: def. Luka Pavlovic (FRA) 6–2, 6–3
- Quarter-finals: def. Andre Ilagan (USA) 7–5, 6–1
- Semi-finals: def. Alex Bolt (AUS, 7th seed) 5–7, 7–6(2) (Bolt retired/withdrew)
- Final: def. Mattia Bellucci (ITA) 1–6, 6–3, 7–6(4)
Epic Final: How the Drama Unfolded
The final began on the back foot for Harris, as a blistering start from the left-handed Bellucci saw the Italian dominate the opening baseline exchanges to take the first set 6–1 in quick time.
Refusing to fold, the South African reset his tactical patterns in the second set. Harris rediscovered his heavy delivery, winning 75% of his first-serve points and converting critical break opportunities to level the match at 6–3.
The deciding third set produced pure drama. With Bellucci dialling up the aggression and piling on pressure late in the set, Harris was pushed to the absolute edge, facing two championship points down on his delivery. Channelling his big-match Grand Slam experience, the South African produced clutch serving and ruthless groundstrokes to extinguish both threats and force a deciding tiebreak.
