Rhine-Ruhr, Germany – July 20, 2025
Day 4 of swimming at the 2025 Rhine-Ruhr World University Games featured another busy programme for Team South Africa, with several athletes advancing through heats, semifinals, and relays. While no medals were added on the day, the team produced competitive swims across a range of events, including further qualifications for finals.
Morning Session – Steady Swims and Relay Qualification
The morning opened with the Women’s 1500m Freestyle, where Stephanie Houtman competed from lane 6 in Heat 1. She placed 5th with a time of 17:03.33, but the result was not enough to advance.
In the Men’s 50m Backstroke, both South African entrants progressed. Ruard van Renen placed 2nd in Heat 5 with a 25.50 swim, while Pieter Coetzé won Heat 6 convincingly in 24.69. Both qualified for the evening semifinals.
The Women’s 100m Butterfly saw Leigh Mc Morran win Heat 3 in 1:02.41. Despite her victory, she did not advance to the semifinals, as her time fell outside the automatic qualification standard.
