BLOEMFONTEIN — South Africa’s Banyana Banyana took a commanding step toward Olympic qualification on Friday afternoon, delivering a composed, dominant display to dispatch Madagascar 4-0 in the first leg of their CAF Women’s Olympic Qualifier at Toyota Stadium.

Striker Ronnel Donnelly stole the spotlight with an electric hat-trick, while Hildah Magaia added late gloss to cap off an afternoon where Desiree Ellis’ side controlled proceedings from start to finish, leaving them in firm command of the tie ahead of next week’s return fixture.

Clinical First-Half Foundation Behind Closed Doors

Staged behind closed doors at Madagascar’s request as the designated home side, the opening exchanges required patience from the South Africans. Madagascar set up in a resolute low defensive block, forcing Banyana to circulate possession and probe for openings across the pitch.

The breakthrough arrived on the half-hour mark when Donnelly pounced inside the box, demonstrating sharp predatory instincts to steer home a teasing set-piece delivery. With the hosts pinned deep inside their own half and South Africa dictating the tempo, Donnelly doubled the advantage seven minutes before the interval with another clinical finish to reward Banyana’s sustained territorial pressure.

Tactical Shifts Unlock Malagasy Resistance

Ellis made adjustments at the break, tweaking the attacking shape to exploit spaces between the lines that had previously been congested. The tactical shift paid immediate dividends, with South Africa generating far sharper combination play in the final third.

In the 61st minute, Fikile Magada whipped in an inch-perfect cross from the flank, allowing Donnelly to turn the ball home and seal a sensational hat-trick. The milestone marked a timely return to peak form for the forward, whose comeback from a spell on the sidelines ahead of WAFCON received a major confidence boost with a clinical display in front of goal.

Magaia capped off the scoreline in the closing stages, finishing off another flowing move from close range to give South Africa an unassailable four-goal cushion.

Squad Management and Navigating the Physical Battle

Beyond the scoreline, the clash presented a test of composure against an increasingly physical Madagascar outfit. Midfielder Nokolo Gqesana found herself on the receiving end of several heavy challenges as the Malagasy side attempted to disrupt South Africa’s passing cadence. In response, Ellis urged her side to move the ball with fewer touches, relying on quick interplay in small pockets rather than trying to out-muscle the opposition.

The technical team also kept one eye on the broader international calendar. Captain Linda Motlhalo was withdrawn at the interval, a calculated decision aimed strictly at load management and player welfare with crucial club and national commitments looming in November, rather than the result of an injury knock. Holding a comfortable two-goal cushion, the coaching staff opted to protect key personnel while giving the supporting cast valuable minutes to close out the contest.

All Eyes on Tuesday’s Return Leg

Rather than focusing purely on running up the aggregate score, the Banyana technical team has emphasised maintaining structural discipline and execution heading into the second leg. For Ellis, clinical positioning, timely deliveries into the box, and penetrative movement behind the backline will remain the primary benchmarks of performance on Tuesday.

The second leg will see South Africa officially take over hosting duties at Toyota Stadium on Tuesday, 13 October. With turnstiles set to reopen to the public, the team has called on local Bloemfontein supporters to pack the stands and rally behind the African champions as they aim to officially seal passage to the next round of Olympic qualifying.
