South Africa’s very own Elbert “Pikachu” Steyn is ready to make history tonight as the Professional Fighters League (PFL) Africa heads to Johannesburg, and the stakes could not be higher for the undefeated fighter. The 25-year-old South African will step into the PFL SmartCage for his first-round featherweight bout against Morocco’s Abderrahman Errachidy, at the Big Top Arena in Carnival City, Brakpan.
Steyn, the only South African on the fight card, carries the weight of an entire nation’s hopes and dreams as he aims to extend his unbeaten record (3-0). The event, which will be broadcast live across Africa, is expected to draw a passionate and packed crowd—a powerful force that Steyn believes will fuel his performance inside the cage.
“This is a dream come true for me,” Steyn reflected ahead of the event. “To be fighting in South Africa on a stage like this, in front of a sold-out crowd, is something I never imagined would happen. I always knew I’d make it to the big stage eventually, but I didn’t think it would be here at home. It’s surreal.”
Though the PFL Africa tournament has been historic for African MMA, Steyn remains laser-focused on what lies ahead. Despite the changes to his bout classification due to both fighters missing weight—now classified as a “catchweight showcase” instead of a formal tournament fight—Steyn is unfazed. He views this as an important opportunity nonetheless, a chance to show the world his skill and determination.
“No, it doesn’t change anything for me,” he said. “I still have to go in there and do my thing. I need to represent South Africa, and that’s my focus. It’s still a stepping stone, 100%. There’s always next year, and I’m ready for the challenge.”
Errachidy, who has a penchant for aggressive brawling, will likely press the action early, seeking to impose his will and finish the fight quickly. However, Steyn is prepared for whatever comes his way, armed with a calm, calculated approach to the fight.
“He likes to throw a lot of punches, rush in, and look for finishes,” Steyn explained. “But I’m more calculated. I know that the finish comes when the right opportunity presents itself. If he rushes me, that’s going to play right into my hands.”
As the sole representative of South Africa at the PFL Africa event, Steyn’s eyes are set firmly on a future that includes competing at the highest levels of MMA. His aspirations go far beyond tonight’s fight—he aims to become one of the top fighters not only in Africa but on the global MMA stage.
“I want to be that dude,” he said. “Once I make it to the bigger leagues, people will know who I am. I’ll be the one they have to watch out for. That’s the future I’m working toward.”
The electric atmosphere in Johannesburg tonight is sure to be one for the history books. Whether or not Steyn’s fight with Errachidy will go into the later rounds remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the Pretoria native is ready to make an impact, both for himself and for South Africa.
Tickets are still available through TicketPro, and the event will be broadcast live on SuperSport and Canal+ across Africa.
