Heavy Mettle Tested: Taljaard Narrowly Misses Podium in Gritty Day for Team SA Weightlifters

The clinking of iron plates and the roar of the crowd set the stage in Glasgow yesterday as Team South Africa’s weightlifting squad opened their 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign. It was a day characterized by near-misses, solid efforts, and heartbreak, showcasing the brutal honesty of a sport where gravity is the ultimate adversary.

When the chalk dust settled on the platform, our athletes proved that while medals may have remained just out of reach, the resilience of the Republic is well represented in Scotland.

Johanni Taljaard: Agonizingly Close to Bronze

In the Women’s 53kg category, Johanni Taljaard delivered a massive performance, narrowly missing out on a Commonwealth medal. Taljaard secured a 78kg lift on her final Snatch attempt and followed it up with a 97kg Clean & Jerk, finishing with a total of 175kg.

This impressive effort placed her in fourth, a mere 3kg behind Canada’s Rebeka Groulx, who took bronze (178kg). Nigeria’s Onome Omolola Didih claimed gold with a staggering 206kg total. Despite missing the podium, Taljaard’s grit under the bar did the nation proud and set a strong tone for the rest of the squad.

Anneke Spies-Burger: Pushing the Limits

Competing in the Women’s 58kg division, Anneke Spies-Burger brought her trademark fight to the platform. Having spoken before the games about the immense multi-year sacrifice required just to qualify, she soaked up every moment of her Commonwealth Games experience.

Spies-Burger posted a 77kg Snatch and rallied in the Clean & Jerk with a successful lift of 101kg on her second attempt. Her 178kg total secured her a respectable seventh place in a fiercely contested final won by Nigeria’s R.F. Lawal. True to her pre-game promise, Spies-Burger brought the whole of South Africa with her to the platform.

Jon-Antohein Phillips: Heartbreak in the 79kg

The Men’s 79kg final delivered a devastating blow for Jon-Antohein Phillips. The seasoned lifter started his campaign solidly with a 119kg Snatch but ran into severe trouble in the Clean & Jerk.

After missing his opening attempt at 166kg, Phillips courageously bumped the weight to 167kg for his final two attempts to keep his hopes alive. Unfortunately, he was unable to secure the lift. Failing to register a score in the Clean & Jerk resulted in a Did Not Finish (DNF) for the South African—a harsh reminder of weightlifting’s unforgiving margins. Malaysia’s E.H. Muhammad took gold in the event with a massive 331kg total.

Looking Ahead: The "Gees" Continues Today

Weightlifting can often be an isolating pursuit, but the shared identity and unique cultural gees of Team SA’s nine-athlete contingent acts as a massive force multiplier for squad morale. Guided by head coaches Lyle Du Plooy and Darryn Anthony, the team is already rallying behind their teammates for the next round of competition.

All eyes now turn to today’s action. Laryne Jefferies will take to the platform in the Women’s 69kg category, while William Swart steps under the bar in the Men’s 88kg.

With the pride of over 60 million people behind them, Team SA is ready to keep hoisting the nation’s hopes. Bring on the next lifts!
