CENTURION, SOUTH AFRICA — Philip Henning delivered a performance of sheer grit and determination on Sunday afternoon, fighting back from a set down to claim the 2026 Rise Centurion Open title in front of a rapturous home crowd.

In a thrilling culmination to an exceptional week of ATP Challenger tennis, the 25-year-old South African outlasted Bulgaria’s Alexander Donski in a gruelling three-set final, cementing a monumental victory on home soil.

A Test of Character on Centre Court

The championship match initially looked to be slipping away from the local favourite. Donski, who had already broken South African hearts by eliminating Khololwam Montsi in a marathon semifinal on Saturday, carried his momentum into Sunday’s clash. The Bulgarian struck the ball with heavy depth and capitalized on early nerves from Henning to secure the opening set.

However, championship titles are built on resilience. Refusing to let the occasion overwhelm him, Henning reset his tactical approach in the second set. Backed by the vocal support of the Centurion faithful, the South African found his rhythm behind his powerful forehand, drastically reducing his unforced errors and beginning to dictate the baseline rallies.

The Turning Point

As the match intensified, the physical toll of Donski’s path through the qualifying rounds and his gruelling semifinal began to show. Henning, capitalizing on the shift in momentum, ramped up the pressure on the Bulgarian’s serve.

By the time the deciding third set arrived, Henning was in full flight. He showcased the exact brand of aggressive, high-IQ tennis that had seen him dispatch the tournament’s number-one seed the day prior. Securing crucial breaks of serve, Henning kept his composure during the high-pressure closing games to seal a brilliant comeback victory.

A Massive Boost for Local Tennis

Henning’s triumph at the Centurion Challenger II is a significant milestone, not just for his personal career trajectory and ATP ranking, but for the South African sporting landscape as a whole.

Securing an ATP Challenger trophy on home soil highlights the absolute necessity of hosting premium international tournaments in South Africa. It provides the country’s elite senior athletes with the platform to compete for critical ranking points and major titles without the exhaustive demands of international travel.

As Henning lifted the trophy to a standing ovation, it served as a perfect capstone to a week that thoroughly showcased the depth, fight, and world-class potential of South African tennis.
