New York, USA – 23 August 2025 – South Africa’s top-ranked tennis player, Lloyd Harris, has officially booked his place in the main draw of the 2025 US Open after grinding through three demanding qualifying rounds this past week.
The 28-year-old, currently ranked 353rd in the world, showed resilience and flashes of his best form to overcome seasoned opponents and seal his return to Grand Slam action. Harris will now face Argentina’s Sebastian Báez in the first round tomorrow at approximately 5pm South African time.
Although Báez, ranked 39th in the world, enters the encounter as the clear favourite, Harris may hold a crucial advantage on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows. Known as a clay-court specialist, Báez will be tested against Harris’s power game and experience on faster surfaces.
Harris’s Road Through Qualifying
Match 1 – Harris edges past Evans in a thriller
In his opening qualifier on August 18, Harris battled past Britain’s Dan Evans in a three-set tussle, winning 6–4, 3–6, 7–5. The South African fired 8 aces, won 75% of points on his first serve, and displayed composure under pressure to close out the deciding set. The razor-thin margin was reflected in the stats, with Harris winning 99 points to Evans’s 98.
Match 2 – Commanding win over Sun Fajing
Three days later, Harris delivered a statement performance, brushing aside China’s Sun Fajing in straight sets 6–2, 6–2. His aggressive serving proved decisive, striking 9 aces and winning an impressive 81% of points on his first serve. Harris broke serve four times and never allowed Sun to settle into rhythm.
Match 3 – Nerves of steel in tiebreak triumph
In the final hurdle on August 22, Harris faced Spain’s Daniel Aguilar and produced another composed performance, prevailing 6–1, 7–6 (7–2). His 12 aces and a flawless 100% win rate on first serves in the second set underlined his confidence. Closing out the tiebreak showed Harris’s growing momentum heading into the main draw.
What’s Next
Harris now shifts focus to his blockbuster first-round clash with Báez. While the Argentine’s ranking suggests an uphill battle, Harris’s recent form, serving firepower, and comfort on hard courts offer South African fans reason for optimism.
