CHENGDU, CHINA — Just weeks after pushing Stefanos Tsitsipas to the wire in an electrifying three-and-a-half-hour epic at the US Open, South Africa’s Lloyd Harris has reaffirmed that his career resurgence is in full swing.
The 29-year-old Capetonian delivered a masterclass week of hard-court tennis at the ATP 250 Chengdu Open, battling through qualifying to reach his first tour-level quarter-final since 2023. Highlighted by a stunning straight-sets upset over top seed Valentin Vacherot, Harris’s campaign in Sichuan proved that his game belongs among the sport’s elite as he continues his determined climb back from injury.
Perfect Run Through Qualifying into the Main Draw
Entering the tournament ranked World No. 136, Harris had to do it the hard way through the qualifying rounds. He set the tone immediately with clinical, straight-sets victories over Japan’s Kenta Miyoshi and Canada’s Alexis Galarneau to punch his ticket to the main draw without conceding a single set.
Carrying that sharp rhythm into the round of 32, Harris dismantled American Aleksandar Kovacevic 6–4, 6–4 behind a booming delivery that produced 13 aces, setting up a high-profile showdown with the tournament’s top-seeded player.
Round | Opponent | Result | Key Match Highlights |
Q1 | Kenta Miyoshi (JPN) | Won 2–0 | Clinical straight-sets victory to open his qualifying campaign. |
Q2 | Alexis Galarneau (CAN) | Won 2–0 | Locked down his main-draw ticket without dropping a set. |

Stunning the Top Seed in Chengdu
In the round of 16, Harris produced arguably his finest performance of the season against Monaco’s World No. 1 seed Valentin Vacherot. Serving with trademark authority, the South African fired 16 aces, won an astonishing 89% of his first-serve points, and did not face a single break point across the entire contest, closing out the match 6–4, 7–6(5).
The victory marked Harris’s first ATP Tour quarter-final appearance in over three years, evoking fond memories of his 2019 breakthrough run in Chengdu when he surged all the way to the semi-finals as a qualifier.
“It feels great. Obviously I’ve had to grind a lot of Challengers to even be able to play in some of these tournaments again after being injured, so it feels very good,” Harris said following his upset win. “Obviously super happy. I’ve played pretty good in Chengdu before, so it’s a place I feel familiar with. It’s nice to be playing here.”
Harris credited his qualifying workload for giving him the edge in sharpness over the tournament’s top seed:
“I think it actually helped to have a couple of matches here before. It was my fourth match, feeling quite comfortable with the conditions, the court. Obviously it was his first match, so a little bit tricky here for him at the start and I used it to my advantage nicely.”
Pushing Hurkacz to the Brink in Quarter-Final Thriller
Harris’s fairytale run concluded on Sunday, September 27, in an edge-of-your-seat quarter-final against Poland’s fifth seed, Hubert Hurkacz.
Both players engaged in an explosive serving duel in the opening set, with neither yielding an inch. That set culminated in a heart-stopping 22-point tiebreak where Harris pushed the former World No. 6 to the absolute limit before Hurkacz finally nicked it 12–10. A single break of serve in the second set was ultimately enough for the Polish star to seal a tight 7–6(10), 6–4 victory.
Despite the narrow defeat, Harris departs China with immense momentum. Between his 16-ace victory over Jack Kennedy in New York, his toe-to-toe clash with Tsitsipas, and a statement run in Chengdu, the Capetonian’s trajectory is pointing resolutely upward as he edges closer to a return to the world’s top 100.
