Silver & Speed: Makatu Claims Historic Track Medal as Dambile Flies in 200m

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND - JULY 30: Gold medalist Zachary Shaw of Team England, Silver medalist Masala Makatu of Team South Africa and Bronze medalists George Quarcoo of Team Canada and guide Oluwasegun Makinde pose for a photo during the medal ceremony for the Men's 100 Metres T12 Final during the Athletics on day seven of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games at Scotstoun Stadium on July 30, 2026 in Glasgow, Scotland. Scotstoun Stadium – It was a day of mixed emotions for South African athletics fans as Team SA took to the track at the Commonwealth Games. The day was marked by personal bests, agonizing near-misses, and a historic silver medal, the first for Team South Africa on the track at this year’s games.

Dambile Dominates, Makatu Shines

The standout performance on the track came from Sinesipho Dambile in the Men’s 200m Semi-Finals. Dambile sent a clear message to his rivals, blistering down the straight to win his heat in an incredible 19.82 seconds. He heads into the final as the fastest qualifier overall and a massive contender for gold. Unfortunately, his compatriot, Mthi Mthimkulu, couldn’t join him in the final, finishing 4th in his heat (20.39s) and 10th overall.

The para-athletes brought South Africa’s first track podium in the Men’s 100m T12 Final. Masala Makatu delivered a memorable performance, storming to a brilliant silver with a time of 11.04 seconds, securing Team South Africa’s very first medal outside of the pool at this year’s Games. Jaco Smit also fought hard in the same final, finishing just off the podium in 4th place (11.24s).

Agonizingly Close in the Hurdles and Shot Put

The track events saw several South Africans come agonizingly close to adding to the medal count. Marione Fourie was a prime example in the Women’s 100m Hurdles. After looking sharp in Round 1, finishing 2nd in her heat (12.50s) to automatically qualify, she fell just short in a tightly contested final. Fourie crossed the line in 12.66 seconds, missing out on the bronze medal by a mere 0.06 seconds to finish in 4th place.

The story was similar in the field events. Aiden Smith put together a fantastic series of throws in the Men’s Shot Put Final, recording a best effort of 20.31m. However, it wasn’t quite enough to secure a spot on the podium, as he finished in 4th place, just 68cm behind the bronze medallist.

PBs and Fighting Finishes

The distance events brought personal triumphs despite missing out on medals. Tayla Kavanagh delivered a gutsy performance in the gruelling Women’s 5000m Final. She pushed through a world-class field to cross the line in 14:58.49 for an 8th-place finish, breaking the 15-minute barrier and setting a fantastic new Personal Best.

In the Women’s One Mile Round 1, Karabo More ran a Season’s Best time of 4:37.97 to finish 5th in her heat. Her time placed her 13th overall, comfortably securing her automatic qualification into the next round.

Semi-Final Heartbreaks

The 400m events proved tough for the South African contingent. In the Men’s 400m Semi-Finals, Zakithi Nene managed to squeeze into the final as one of the “fastest non automatic qualifiers,” finishing 3rd in his heat (45.70s) and 7th overall. However, Lythe Pillay narrowly missed out, finishing 4th in his heat (45.87s), just one spot shy of advancing.

In the Women’s 400m Semi-Finals, Marlie Viljoen saw her campaign come to an end after finishing 4th in her heat with a time of 52.99 seconds, placing 13th overall.

Overall, it was a day defined by both progress and fierce competition for Team SA. While a few podium spots eluded our athletes by fine margins, Makatu’s silver medal marks a notable step forward for the squad outside the pool. With Dambile running impressive times into the 200m final and Nene securing his place in the 400m, South African supporters have a great deal of promising action to look forward to in the coming rounds.
