GLASGOW — South Africa’s Commonwealth Games medal hopes ended in agonizing fashion on Thursday night as the Proteas surrendered a six-goal first-quarter lead to fall 58-54 to England in a winner-takes-all Pool A thriller at The Hydro.

With both teams tied on six points entering the final pool match, the equation was stark: the winner would join Australia in the semifinals, while the loser was relegated to classification placement play. Despite a courageous 60-minute effort led by Elmeré van der Berg’s 48 goals, it was England who produced a clutch second-half rally to book their spot in the final four.

Proteas Blitz Early to Take Control

Jenny van Dyk’s side could not have asked for a better start. Playing with high intensity and sharp midcourt distribution, South Africa stunned England in the opening 15 minutes. Wing Attack Khanyisa Elaine Chawane and Centre Tarle Nikkita Mathe fed the circle effortlessly, allowing Elmeré van der Berg to assert her authority. Van der Berg scored virtually at will, propelling the Proteas to an impressive 17-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.

England coach Anna Stembridge made critical defensive adjustments entering the second period, introducing Funmi Fadoju at Goal Defence and Halimat Adio at Goal Keeper. The changes slowly disrupted South Africa’s rhythm, allowing England to chip away at the margin and outscore the Proteas 17-12, narrowing SA’s halftime advantage to a razor-thin 29-28.

Third Quarter Shift and Final Quarter Battle

The defining momentum shift occurred in the third quarter. England’s relentless defensive pressure forced crucial turnovers from the South African midcourt. Behind flawless finishing from Goal Shooter Olivia Tchine and Goal Attack Lois Pearson, who didn’t miss a single attempt all match, England claimed the quarter 15-10 to turn a one-goal deficit into a 43-39 lead heading into the final term.

The Proteas refused to go quietly in a fiercely physical fourth quarter. Van der Berg continued her heroic display, converting 48 of her 53 attempts (91%), while substitute Kamogelo Maseko provided energetic circle entries. South Africa matched England goal-for-goal (15-15 in the final period), but the four-goal deficit proved impossible to erase against a composed Roses side that managed the clock expertly in the dying minutes.

Relegated to Placement Matches

The 58-54 defeat leaves South Africa third in Pool A with three wins and two losses. While Australia and England advance to contest the medals, the Proteas must now regroup emotionally for the 5th-8th place classification games.

It is a bitter pill to swallow for a squad that demonstrated world-class netball across the preliminary round. However, with young talent standing tall and competitive performances against top-tier nations, the foundation for the future remains strong.
