Johannesburg, South Africa (July 2025) – Reddam House Helderfontein transformed into a hub of energy, spirit, and sporting excellence from 17 to 20 July 2025, as it played proud host to the 2025 UIPM U17 Modern Pentathlon World Championships. Over 80 top-tier athletes from 21 countries gathered in Johannesburg for a fierce contest of skill and endurance across four demanding disciplines: fencing, obstacle course, swimming, and laser run.
Among the competitors were South Africa’s own rising stars, who took to the world stage with confidence and courage. The girls’ team delivered an outstanding performance, with Tatiana Thomatos securing an individual bronze and joining forces with Megan Kleynhans and Duné Haasbroek to earn silver in the team rankings, a proud moment for the host nation.
The South African boys’ team also displayed tenacity and determination. Despite a difficult setback when individual contender Daniël Grové was forced to withdraw after an injury during fencing, his teammates pushed forward, embodying resilience and the true South African spirit.
The championship was marked by record-breaking moments and elite-level competition. Hungary’s Nemere Szecsi captured the spotlight with a new world record of 1,508 points to win gold in the boys’ final, followed by Turkey’s Arda Meric with silver and Egypt’s Momen Abdelmgeed with bronze. In the boys’ team event, Hungary triumphed once more, ahead of Germany and Egypt. Despite Grové’s withdrawal, the South African boys’ team ended in sixth place overall.
The girls’ final saw Egypt’s Farida Khalil (known as “the storm girl”) power her way to gold, with Italy’s Annachiara Allara taking silver. South Africa’s podium presence added a powerful local narrative to an already thrilling contest. Egypt, South Africa, and Hungary claimed the team podium in that order.
The Modern Pentathlon challenged U17 athletes across four diverse and intense disciplines. Points are accumulated across each event: épée fencing duels, a fast-paced obstacle course that tests agility and strength, a 200-metre freestyle swim for speed, and a laser run, an electrifying combination of precision laser shooting combined with 4 laps of 600m each. The athlete with the highest total score at the end of the day, emerges as champion.
With the U17 world championship concluded, attention now shifts to the ICONIC Mossel Bay, which will proudly host the UIPM Biathle, Triathle & Laser Run World Championships in December 2025. South Africa once again prepares to welcome the world, as international talent returns for another unforgettable showcase of multisport excellence.
