The Springbok Women carved out a moment of history in Northampton on Sunday, defeating Italy 29–24 in a nail-biting Pool D clash at the Women’s Rugby World Cup. Not only was this South Africa’s first-ever win over Italy, but it also left them within touching distance of a maiden quarterfinal berth.
If France beat Brazil later tonight – the most likely outcome after Les Bleues opened with a 24–0 win over the Italians – then both South Africa and France will be confirmed as Pool D’s quarterfinal qualifiers, with a round still to play.
Fast Start, Fierce Fightback
South Africa wasted no time in making their intent clear. Just two minutes in, powerhouse No.8 Aseza Hele continued her rich try-scoring form from the Brazil match, smashing through with a trademark drive. On the 21-minute mark, Libbie Janse van Rensburg’s disguised dummy split the defence before she flicked an inside pass to Nadine Roos, who raced clear to double the lead at 12–0.
Italy, however, struck back almost immediately when fullback Vittoria Minuzzi crossed the line. But the Boks responded with arguably the move of the half – a cleverly orchestrated scrum play that sent winger Ayanda Malinga clear out wide. At 17–5, coach Swys de Bruin’s animated touchline celebration showed just how much the set-piece rehearsal meant.
Yet, the final 10 minutes of the half belonged to the Italians, who punished South Africa’s errors with a converted try to narrow the gap to 17–12 at halftime.
Momentum Swings and Nervy Finishes
Italy began the second half brightly and soon levelled at 17–17 after exploiting a Bok handling error. For the next 20 minutes the contest swung back and forth, with both sides testing each other’s defensive resolve.
On 59 minutes, the South African forwards reasserted dominance, crashing over from a scrum drive to restore a 24–17 lead. But Italy’s line-out weaponry proved equally effective, and in the 69th minute they muscled over to tie the match again at 24–24.
The defining blow came with just under seven minutes remaining. Patient buildup through the forwards saw the Boks inch their way to the try line before forcing their way over for what proved the match-winner. A nervy missed conversion left the door ajar at 29–24, but the South African defence held firm through a frantic closing passage to seal an unforgettable victory.
On the Brink of History
The result leaves Italy needing a highly improbable Brazilian upset over France to keep their quarterfinal hopes alive. For South Africa, meanwhile, the equation is simple: barring a miracle, the Springbok Women will contest their first-ever World Cup quarterfinal – an achievement that marks a watershed moment for the women’s game back home.
South Africa now turn their attention to their final pool fixture against France on 7 September – but with confidence soaring and history already made, the Boks will embrace the challenge with nothing to lose and everything to gain.
