AMSTELVEEN, Netherlands — In tournament hockey, the line between heartbreak and growth is often drawn in seconds. For fifty minutes beneath the crisp morning skies of the Wagener Stadium on Friday, the South African Women’s Hockey team engaged in a high-stakes, tactical chess match with Japan.

When Ntsopa Mokoena found the back of the net in the 51st minute, it was more than just a goal, it was the euphoric release of an entire campaign’s worth of pent-up resilience. While Japan’s Hiroka Murayama snatched parity barely ninety seconds later to seal a 1-1 draw, the result delivered South Africa their hard-earned first point of the 2026 FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup.

More importantly, it signalled a side finding its soul in the fire of top-tier international competition.

From the Fire of Pool D

To understand the weight of Friday’s performance, one must look back at the crucible South Africa survived in Pool D. Pitted against the world’s elite, England, India, and Olympic silver medallists China, the African champions absorbed heavy blows, conceding 15 goals across three bruising encounters.

Yet, beneath the scorelines lay undeniable sparks of defiance. Against China, Paris-Gail Isaacs’s blistering second-quarter penalty corner had dragged South Africa level, showcasing their ability to hurt the world’s best on transition. But top-flight hockey is merciless; minor lapses were punished instantly, leaving the squad hungry for complete, 60-minute composure.

Transitioning into the Phase 2 (9th–16th Classification) Pool G, South Africa arrived not with bowed heads, but with the hardened posture of a team forged by trial.

A Masterclass in Defensive Structure

From the opening pushback against Asian powerhouse Japan, the transformation was evident. Where earlier pool matches saw South Africa under siege, Friday was a showcase of disciplined positioning, compactness, and calm under pressure.

Captain Edith Molikoe marshalled the backline with authority, snuffing out Japanese circle entries and neutralizing all four penalty corners conceded across the match. Goalkeeper Morgan de Jager and her defensive unit denied Japan the rhythm they thrive on, reducing a notoriously fluid Japanese attack to speculative efforts.

Ninety Seconds of Pure Drama

After three scoreless quarters of relentless attrition, the dam broke in the 51st minute.

Springing forward on a crisp counter-attack, South Africa breached the Japanese circle. Ntsopa Mokoena pounced on an opening, unleashing a clinical open-play strike past goalkeeper Miyu Hasegawa. For the first time in the tournament, South Africa held the lead, and with just nine minutes remaining, a monumental victory seemed within grasp.

The euphoria, however, was fleeting. Japan responded with the ruthlessness of a seasoned international outfit. At 51:47, just 89 seconds after the restart, forward Hiroka Murayama carved space inside the South African D and slotted home the equalizer.

Rather than unravelling after the gut-punch, South Africa locked down the contest. Over the dying minutes, they absorbed late Japanese pressure with unwavering discipline, preserving the 1-1 draw to secure their first official point in Amstelveen.

Sunday’s final classification pool match against Chile will determine the crossover ranking matches in Phase 3 (competing for 9th, 11th, 13th, or 15th place).
