Tokyo, Japan – Day 4 Recap
South Africa’s presence at the 2025 World Athletics Championships was felt on Day 4 through the men’s 400m semifinals, where contrasting fortunes defined the performances of Zakithi Nene and Lythe Pillay.
Nene Confidently Advances
In Heat 1, Zakithi Nene produced a composed and powerful display, crossing the line first in 44.20 seconds. The reigning national champion looked in complete control throughout the race, holding back enough to suggest there is more in reserve for the final. His assured run not only secured automatic qualification but also reinforced his growing status as one of the top contenders for a medal in Tokyo.
Observers noted how Nene’s stride appeared relaxed and unhurried, hinting that he had plenty left in the tank for when it matters most. With a championship final looming, his performance offered a major boost to Team South Africa’s medal aspirations.
Pillay Misses Out
By contrast, teammate Lythe Pillay endured a tougher outing. Lining up in his semifinal, he ran strongly but faded over the closing stages to finish sixth in 44.82 seconds. The time, while competitive, left him just shy of the non-automatic qualifying spots, ending his campaign at the semifinal stage. Pillay has a fantastic season in 2025, which included being Crowned the World University Champion which he won two months ago with a time of 44.84
