CAPE TOWN – It was always going to be a monumental task for the South African national ice hockey team. Coming off a heart-breaking overtime loss to Mexico and a tough defeat against Thailand, the Rhinos faced the undefeated tournament leaders, Türkiye, in their third match of the IIHF World Championship Group stage at the Grand West Casino Ice Station.

Despite a valiant effort and a spirited third-period consolation goal, the sheer firepower of the Turkish side proved too much, handing South Africa an 8-1 defeat.

A Mountain to Climb from the Puck Drop

Türkiye, clear favorites for promotion to Group A, showed exactly why they sit at the top of the standings. They came out of the gates flying, establishing a 3-0 lead in the first period. Ferhat Bakal opened the scoring just under five minutes in, followed rapidly by back-to-back goals from Emrah Savas.

The second period saw the visitors tighten their grip on the game. A shorthanded goal by Yusuf Kars at the midway point seemed to break the South African momentum, which was quickly followed by a powerplay goal from Bakal. By the time Oguz Karakoc netted Türkiye’s sixth goal right before the second intermission, South Africa had already made a goaltending change, bringing in Ryan Boyd to relieve Ruan van der Merwe.

Carelse Gets the Home Crowd Roaring

Despite the daunting 6-0 deficit heading into the final frame, the Rhinos didn’t stop fighting. Their perseverance paid off at the 45:56 mark when Luke Carelse found the back of the net, assisted by Uthman Samaai and Jean-Michel van Doesburgh, giving the passionate Cape Town crowd something to celebrate.

However, Türkiye’s depth and experience shone through in the closing stages. Emin Inandi restored the six-goal cushion, and Ferhat Bakal completed his hat-trick with just three minutes left on the clock to seal the 8-1 victory.

Key Match Stats:

  • Shots on Goal: Türkiye 32 – 25 South Africa
  • Standout Performer (TUR): Ferhat Bakal (3 Goals, 1 Assist)
  • Goaltending: Sava Voronov (TUR) was a wall, saving 24 of the 25 shots he faced for a 96% save percentage.

Do-or-Die: The Relegation Battle Awaits Tonight

With the loss to Türkiye behind them, South Africa (currently sitting 5th with 1 point) must immediately shift their focus. The tournament structure is unforgiving, and tonight’s matchup is nothing short of a must-win survival clash.

Tonight at 8:00 PM, the Rhinos take on Turkmenistan, the only team below them in the standings (0 points). Both squads are desperately searching for their first regulation win to stave off relegation to Division III Group B.

Current Standings (Top 6):

  1. Türkiye – 9 pts (+14 GD)
  2. Bosnia & Herzegovina – 8 pts (+5 GD)
  3. Mexico – 6 pts (+1 GD)
  4. Thailand – 3 pts (-4 GD)
  5. South Africa – 1 pt (-12 GD)
  6. Turkmenistan – 0 pts

For the South African squad, the math is simple: win tonight, or face the reality of relegation. The team will wrap up their grueling tournament schedule on Sunday night against a strong Bosnia and Herzegovina side, making tonight’s clash against Turkmenistan their best opportunity to secure their tournament survival.

Get down to the Grand West Casino Ice Station tonight to get behind the Rhinos when they need it most!
