Day 5 of swimming at the 2025 Rhine-Ruhr World University Games proved to be one of the most successful yet for Team South Africa, with Pieter Coetzé adding two more medals to his tally and the squad securing a relay bronze to round off a productive day in the pool.
Morning Session – Key Qualifications and Relay Progress
The morning heats featured a mix of close battles and standout performances. In the Men’s 100m Butterfly, Guy Brooks placed 8th in Heat 5 (54.93) and did not advance, while teammate Ruard van Renen impressed with a 53.27 swim for 6th in Heat 8, progressing to the semifinals.
In the Women’s 200m Freestyle, Georgia Nel touched 3rd in her heat (2:03.51) but fell short of qualifying. Hannah Robertson, however, advanced with a strong 2:01.70 in Heat 7, placing 6th overall.
The Men’s 50m Breaststroke saw Matthew Randle finish 3rd in his heat (28.48) but narrowly miss progression.
South Africa had double success in the Women’s 50m Backstroke, with Olivia Nel (28.19) and Michaela de Villiers (28.30) both qualifying for the semifinals after finishing 2nd and 3rd in their heat.
In the Women’s 200m Individual Medley, both Dakota Tucker (2:17.93) and Kate Meyer (2:22.13) were unable to advance despite determined efforts.
The morning ended on a high as the Mixed 4x100m Freestyle Relay quartet of Van Renen, Brooks, Olivia Nel, and Georgia Nel combined for 3:31.51, placing 2nd in their heat and booking a spot in the evening final.
Evening Session – Medals and Milestones
The finals session brought medals, excitement, and another golden moment for South Africa.
In the Men’s 100m Freestyle Final, Pieter Coetzé stormed to silver in 48.12, adding to his earlier gold in the 100m Backstroke on Day 3.
The Women’s 50m Backstroke Semifinals were a showcase of South African speed, with Olivia Nel (27.96) winning her semifinal and Michaela de Villiers (28.00) finishing 2nd in the same race. Both swimmers progressed to the final.
Despite her strong morning swim, Hannah Robertson was unable to progress beyond the semifinals of the 200m Freestyle, finishing 7th in her race (2:01.24). Similarly, Dakota Tucker exited after an 8th-place finish in the 200m IM semifinal (2:18.63).
The highlight of the night came in the Men’s 50m Backstroke Final, where Coetzé dominated in 24.49 to claim gold – his second title of the Games and third medal overall. Teammate Van Renen also featured in the final, finishing 8th (25.36) after his packed competition schedule.
Van Renen returned shortly after for the 100m Butterfly semifinal, but the effort told as he placed 8th (55.14) and did not advance.
The evening closed with another podium finish for Team SA in the Mixed 4x100m Freestyle Relay Final, where Van Renen, Brooks, Olivia Nel, and Georgia Nel combined to secure bronze in 3:28.51.
Building a Medal Collection
With Coetzé’s gold and silver haul and the relay bronze, South Africa added three more medals on Day 5, bringing the swimming team’s overall tally higher and keeping momentum firmly in their corner.
The performances of Olivia Nel and Michaela de Villiers in the backstroke semifinals promise further opportunities in upcoming finals, while the depth of the squad across multiple events highlights the steady progress of Team SA at this year’s Games.
