Rhine-Ruhr, Germany – July 26, 2025
As our daily post games reflections continue from the 2025 Rhine-Ruhr World University Games, Day 1 saw South Africa’s tennis team take to the courts for the opening round of singles competition—marking the start of a long tournament ahead. Competing against top-tier international opposition and under pressure-filled conditions, both of South Africa’s singles representatives gave spirited efforts but ultimately fell short in their opening encounters.
Ndungane Battles Hard in Singles Debut
First up for Team South Africa was Lilitha Ndungane, who took on Kate Fakih of the USA in the Women’s Singles Round of 64 on Court 13. Despite a promising start and moments of inspired play, Ndungane struggled to find her rhythm throughout the match.
While the contest featured several extended rallies and flashes of her court coverage, it was the key points that proved decisive—many of which slipped away at crucial times. Fakih’s relentless consistency and pressure on return of serve proved telling, with the American winning 64% of points on Ndungane’s serve. By contrast, Ndungane managed just 33% when receiving.
The final score—6-2, 6-1 in Fakih’s favour—reflected the American’s ability to control the tempo and convert opportunities.
Ndungane’s tournament, however, was far from over. She will move into the women’s singles consolation draw, offering a chance to regroup and fight again and for placement. She was also set to return to the court in the women’s doubles alongside Erine Lategan later in the week.
Fogle Faces German Crowd and Power Play
Later in the day, Jason Fogle entered the men’s singles draw, facing a difficult task against local German player Alessio Vasquez, buoyed by a vocal home crowd. Unfortunately for Fogle, the pattern of the day continued.
Vasquez capitalised on Fogle’s inconsistent first serve percentage, punishing second serves with aggressive returns. On the other end, Vasquez’s powerful serve added to the challenge, and Fogle struggled to find a foothold—winning only 38% of points on the return.
Despite moments of resistance and strong rallies, the momentum remained with the German, who ultimately sealed the match in straight sets. Like his teammate, Fogle would need to look at rebounding in the consolation rounds of the men’s singles draw, and he was also set to return to the court on Day 2 in the men’s doubles, partnering with Damien Nezar.
Looking Ahead: Time to Reset and Refocus
It may not have been the start South Africa’s tennis team had envisioned, but Day 1 offered valuable insight into the intensity and quality of play at this level. With the early nerves behind them, the team had time to reset, reframe, and prepare to come back stronger in the days that followed.
