Mackay, Australia – August 22, 2025
South Africa have once again stamped their dominance over Australia in one-day internationals, clinching the three-match series with an emphatic 84-run victory in the second ODI at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay. The result gives the Proteas an unassailable 2–0 lead with one match to spare, while extending their remarkable record of five consecutive ODI series wins against their fierce rivals.
Proteas Recover After Early Wobble
Stand-in captain Aiden Markram’s decision to bat first looked questionable when South Africa were reduced to 2–8 inside the opening six overs, with Xavier Bartlett removing both Markram (0) and Ryan Rickelton (8). But the visitors found stability through Matthew Breetzke, who played a mature yet attacking innings of 88 off 78 balls. His knock — which featured eight fours and two sixes — made him only the second player in history to register four consecutive fifty-plus scores in his first four ODIs.
Breetzke shared a crucial 67-run stand with Tony de Zorzi (38) and later added 89 with Tristan Stubbs, whose composed 74 anchored the middle order. While Adam Zampa’s three wickets and Nathan Ellis’ disciplined spell kept Australia in the contest, South Africa still managed to post a competitive 277 all out in 49.1 overs, with Keshav Maharaj’s late cameo of 22 proving valuable.
Ngidi’s Spell Breaks Australia
Australia’s reply began disastrously. Nandre Burger trapped Travis Head for 6 in the third over, and one ball later, Lungi Ngidi struck with the dismissal of Marnus Labuschagne for 1 — continuing the Queenslander’s lean patch.
Mitchell Marsh’s attempt to steady the innings was cut short on 18 by Wiaan Mulder, and while Cameron Green (35) and Josh Inglis added some resistance, it was only Inglis who truly threatened. The wicketkeeper produced a spirited 87 off 74 deliveries, but he lacked support as wickets tumbled around him.
Ngidi’s disciplined pace proved decisive, as he removed Inglis alongside Aaron Hardie, Xavier Bartlett, and Adam Zampa to claim a superb 5/42. Burger (2/23) and Senuran Muthusamy (2/30) provided excellent support, as Australia crumbled to 193 all out in the 38th over.
A Continuing Rivalry of Contrasts
The victory highlights South Africa’s dominance in this format. Since 2016, the Proteas have won eight of the last 10 bilateral ODI series against Australia, including all five most recent encounters. Australia, meanwhile, are now winless in their last four ODIs and have been bowled out for under 200 in six of their last 11 matches — a trend that will worry their selectors heading into a packed international calendar.
For South Africa, the result reflects both promise and balance. Breetzke’s consistency has provided a fresh spark at the top of the order, while Ngidi’s five-for served as a reminder of his match-winning pedigree. With the series already sealed, the Proteas now head into Sunday’s dead rubber with the chance to complete a rare clean sweep in Australian conditions.
