The South African Women’s Hockey team kicked off their four-match test series against Namibia with a dominant victory, setting a strong tone for their final FIH Hockey World Cup preparations. With massive World Cup clashes against England, China, and India on the horizon, this series offers an invaluable opportunity to fine-tune combinations and finalize the squad.
Our Sport South Africa team was right there on the sidelines, capturing exclusive images of the team in action as they defended their unbeaten international record against their neighbours.
Match Highlights & Goal Scorers
South Africa started brightly, dominating possession early on. While they initially had to work hard to find gaps in the Namibian defense, the breakthrough eventually came:
- Kayla de Waal opened the scoring with a brilliant piece of individual skill, turning sharply and firing a low strike past Namibian goalkeeper Petro Stoffberg at the near post.
- Hannah Pearce doubled the advantage in the second quarter. Stepping up for a penalty corner, she powered a pinpoint drag flick past Stoffberg for her 6th international goal.
- Hannah Pearce struck again in the third quarter, finding crucial space during the second phase of a penalty corner and expertly guiding the ball into the far corner.
- Ntsopa Mokoena sealed the deal by finishing off an outstanding piece of setup work from Thati Zulu down the right-hand flank, marking her 12th international goal.
Namibia put up a resilient fight, particularly in the second quarter where they disrupted South Africa’s rhythm and limited clear chances. However, the hosts’ offensive pressure ultimately proved too much to handle.
Milestone Spotlight: Ntsopa Mokoena
This opening test was an extra special occasion for Ntsopa Mokoena, who proudly earned her 50th international cap. She capped off her milestone appearance not only with a fantastic goal but by being named the Player of the Match.
Looking Ahead
While it was a highly positive opening victory, the team noted that greater consistency and clinical finishing inside the circle will be a key focus as the series progresses, given the high number of dangerous circle entries created.
