BENONI – The Proteas Women delivered a commanding final statement at Willowmoore Park on Monday, securing a 23-run victory over India to comfortably claim the five-match T20I series 4-1.

Opting to test their batting-first strategy after relying on successful chases earlier in the tour, captain Laura Wolvaardt produced a phenomenal unbeaten 92 off just 56 deliveries. Her brilliant knock, decorated with 11 boundaries and two towering sixes, anchored the South African innings and propelled the hosts to a competitive 155/6. Suné Luus provided valuable support at the top with a steady 23, while India’s Renuka Singh (2/21) and Shree Charani (2/22) worked tirelessly to contain the scoring in the final overs.

In response, the Indian chase struggled to find sustained momentum against a highly disciplined Proteas bowling attack. Nonkululeko Mlaba was magnificent with the ball, stifling the visitors and picking up crucial wickets—including the prized scalp of Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (22)—to finish with exceptional figures of 2/15. Nadine de Klerk also made a significant impact upon her return to the side, claiming 2/26 to keep the pressure firmly on the tourists.

Despite a spirited fightback from Bharti Fulmali (40 off 30 balls) and a quick-fire 25 from Richa Ghosh, the required run rate eventually proved insurmountable. India was restricted to 132/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

Series Roundup: A Warning Shot Ahead of the World Cup

This comprehensive 4-1 triumph serves as a massive confidence booster for the Proteas Women as the journey toward the T20 World Cup in June accelerates. South Africa’s dominance throughout the series was characterized by clinical run-chases, consistent top-order batting, and relentless bowling execution under pressure.

Wolvaardt led from the front spectacularly, rightfully earning Player of the Match honors in Benoni, while players like Chloe Tryon and Ayabonga Khaka delivered match-winning performances in the earlier fixtures.

India showed their resilience, notably in their 14-run victory in the fourth T20I courtesy of Deepti Sharma’s five-wicket haul, and Harmanpreet Kaur’s consistent run-scoring across the tour. However, the hosts simply proved too strong overall, showcasing impressive squad depth and tactical adaptability.

As the Proteas head into a well-deserved break before finalizing their World Cup preparations, this authoritative series victory on home soil sends a resounding message to the rest of the cricketing world: South Africa is peaking at exactly the right time.
