South Africa’s sprinting superstar, Akani Simbine, in partnership with his wife Terisa Simbine, is set to host a community-driven Sports Festival tomorrow the 4th October at Edenglen High School, through their non-profit initiative, the Akani Simbine Foundation.
The event promises to be a celebration of sport, music, and community spirit, bringing together young athletes, families, and fans for a day packed with activities. Sport South Africa will be on the ground to capture the atmosphere, conduct interviews, and provide full coverage of the day.
Giving Back Through Sport
The festival is a flagship initiative of the Akani Simbine Foundation, which is dedicated to uplifting South African communities through sport, education, and health programs. Established by Simbine and his wife Terisa, a nurse passionate about supporting vulnerable children, the foundation’s mission is rooted in personal experience.
“We want every young person, regardless of their background, to have the opportunity and support to reach their full potential,” the Foundation states in its vision. Its holistic approach focuses on:
- Sports: Providing coaching, facilities, and equipment to instill discipline and teamwork.
- Education: Offering tutoring and resources to empower academic success.
- Health: Promoting physical and mental well-being through awareness and access to care.
For Simbine, Africa’s fastest man and one of South Africa’s most beloved athletes, the festival is more than an event—it’s a chance to inspire the next generation.
What to Expect at the Festival
The day will begin with a 2km and 5km fun run, before moving on to track events ranging from 60m to 800m across age groups from U/7 to U/19, as well as seniors. The program will close with 4x100m relays and a celebrity race against Simbine himself, sure to be a highlight for the crowd. Entries are open to any athlete or team.
Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, the festival will feature live music and entertainment, making it a day for the whole family. Importantly, all proceeds will go directly to the foundation’s programs and objectives, ensuring the event leaves a lasting impact beyond the track.
Building a Legacy
Born from a shared vision between Akani and Terisa, the Foundation stands as a testament to perseverance, compassion, and purpose. Together, they are determined to create opportunities for children in underserved communities—laying the foundations for brighter futures.
Tomorrow’s festival is set to be a true reflection of that mission: sport as a catalyst for hope, unity, and transformation.
