After more than a decade of anchoring the defensive end for the South African national team, veteran goal defender Karla Pretorius has officially announced her retirement from international netball.
The 36-year-old steps away from the international court leaving behind a profound legacy as one of the most formidable and dynamic defenders in the modern era of the sport. Known for her exceptional athleticism, clean intercepts, and ability to seamlessly read opposition attacking plays, Pretorius concludes her international career with exactly 125 Proteas Test caps.
Her final appearance in the green and gold came at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, marking an emotional and fitting final chapter on the global stage.
A Global Defensive Force
Pretorius has been a staple at major international tournaments, representing South Africa at the 2015, 2019, and 2023 Netball World Cups, alongside multiple Commonwealth Games campaigns.
Her defining international moment arguably arrived during the 2019 Netball World Cup in Liverpool. Her relentless pressure and defensive mastery were instrumental in driving South Africa to the semi-finals, a performance that earned her the prestigious Player of the Tournament award and cemented her status among the sport’s global elite.
Beyond the international arena, Pretorius enjoyed massive success at the club level. She was a foundation player for the Sunshine Coast Lightning in Australia’s fiercely competitive Super Netball league. During her tenure, she played a starring role in securing back-to-back premiership titles in 2017 and 2018, while also sweeping the club’s Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year awards.
A Triumphant Domestic Return
After taking a sabbatical from the sport in 2025 to prioritize her family and professional life, Pretorius made a highly successful return to the South African domestic scene in 2026.
Taking on the captaincy for the Free State Crinums in the Telkom Netball League (TNL), she demonstrated that her defensive instincts remained as sharp as ever. She led the team to a TNL title victory and was appropriately named Defender of the Tournament, proving her enduring impact on the local game.
Transition to Coaching
While her playing days on the international stage have concluded, her involvement in netball is far from over as she transitions her expertise toward coaching and development.
Pretorius is currently serving as the Director of Netball at Hoërskool Fichardtpark in Bloemfontein. She recently took charge of the Mangaung team during the South African National Netball Championships in Cape Town, guiding the next generation of provincial talent. Furthermore, she has stepped into the role of assistant coach for the University of the Free State Kovsies in the Varsity Netball series, working alongside legendary South African coach Burta de Kock.
As she moves fully into this next chapter, Pretorius leaves behind a blueprint of defensive excellence and professionalism that will influence South African netball for years to come.
