CAPE TOWN – Riding the emotional high of a dramatic, relegation-saving victory against Turkmenistan just days prior, the South African national ice hockey team returned to the Grand West Casino Ice Station for their final match of the IIHF Division III Group A World Championship.

Facing a formidable Bosnia & Herzegovina side that had been battling near the top of the standings all week, the Rhinos delivered a fitting end to their campaign. In a seesaw battle that kept the passionate home crowd on the edge of their seats until the final buzzer, South Africa secured a thrilling 4-3 victory to close out the tournament on a massive high.

An Early Breakthrough

With their Division III Group A survival already secured, the Rhinos played with a renewed sense of freedom and confidence. They dictated the early tempo, and their aggressive forechecking paid off just under eight minutes into the first period.

At the 07:57 mark, Duvan van der Merwe ignited the Ice Station crowd, finding the back of the net off a beautifully executed assist from Stefan Kluyts. The South African defence, anchored once again by goaltender Ryan Boyd, held firm through the remainder of the period, allowing the hosts to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

A Wild Second Period

If the first period was about control, the second was pure chaos. Bosnia & Herzegovina, eager to secure their own positioning in the final standings, came out swinging. Jakub Silajdzic levelled the score at 26:21, and seven minutes later, Faris Capin put the visitors ahead 2-1, threatening to spoil the home team’s farewell party.

However, the resilience that defined South Africa’s win over Turkmenistan was on full display. Less than two minutes after falling behind, the Rhinos struck back. Stefan Kluyts, who had assisted the first goal, turned goalscorer at 35:57, finishing off a sequence orchestrated by Dion Phakathi and Duvan van der Merwe to tie the game at 2-2.

The momentum swung instantly back to the hosts. Just over a minute later, at 37:19, Daanyal Kamish fired South Africa back into the lead, sending the Rhinos into the dressing room up 3-2 after a breathless twenty minutes of hockey.

Obery Plays the Hero in Tense Final Frame

Bosnia & Herzegovina refused to go quietly. Early in the third period (43:02), the dangerous Jakub Silajdzic netted his second goal of the night, locking the game in a tense 3-3 deadlock and setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

As the clock ticked down and legs grew heavy, it became a battle of sheer willpower. At 54:40, the breakthrough finally arrived. Alex Obery etched his name into the scoresheet, firing home what would be the game-winning goal off assists from Wesley Krotz and Dylan Compton.

The final five minutes were a test of pure defensive grit for the Rhinos. A late slashing penalty on Dion Phakathi at 58:10 gave Bosnia & Herzegovina a crucial powerplay. The visitors immediately pulled their goaltender, Ivan Popov, for a 6-on-4 advantage. But Ryan Boyd and the South African penalty kill stood tall, shutting the door to secure the 4-3 victory.
