It was a highly active week for South African track and field as 20 athletes competed across multiple international venues, highlighted by strong performances at the World Athletics Diamond League meetings in Rome and Stockholm. While local athletes secured several podium finishes, the week also provided a clear gauge of the standard required as the international season intensifies.

Podium Success and High-Speed Fields in the Diamond League

The primary focus of the week fell on the top-tier Diamond League circuit, which hosted consecutive events in Italy and Sweden.

At the Bauhaus-Galan in Stockholm, Zakithi Nene delivered South Africa’s standout performance of the weekend. Nene controlled the Men’s 400m from the back straight to secure a decisive victory in 44.48 seconds.

In the Men’s 200m, Sinesipho Dambile finished a strong second, clocking 20.10 seconds behind American Kenny Bednarek, who won in 19.87 seconds, which is one of the fastest times this season. Fellow South African Mthi Mthimkulu finished fifth in the same race with a time of 20.78 seconds.

The Women’s 800m proved to be an exceptionally fast encounter. Prudence Sekgodiso placed fifth in 1:57.70, a highly competitive time in a historic race won by Switzerland’s Audrey Werro. Werro clocked a new Diamond League and Swiss national record of 1:53.98 to narrowly edge out Great Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson.

Earlier in the week at the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea in Rome, Marione Fourie continued her consistent form in the Women’s 100m Hurdles. Fourie finished fourth, recording a season’s best of 12.59 seconds, bringing her within a tenth of a second of her own national record (12.49). In a stacked Men’s 100m field, Akani Simbine finished sixth in 10.03 seconds, in a race won by American Noah Lyles in 9.88 seconds.

Smit and Leotlela Secure Continental Tour Victories

South African athletes also enjoyed success on the World Athletics Continental Tour and regional European circuits.

  • Prague, Czechia: At the Josef Odlozil Memorial, Douw Smit claimed victory in the Men’s Javelin with a top throw of 83.09m, beating local favorite Martin Konečný. On the track, Sabelo Dhlamini finished second in the Men’s 400m Hurdles with a time of 49.59 seconds, finishing behind Jamaica’s Assinie Wilson.
  • Moscow, Russia: At the Znamensky Memorial, Gift Leotlela led a solid South African showing in the Men’s 100m, winning the final in 10.02 seconds. Teammates Cheswill Johnson (10.20) and Tsepo Tyantini (10.24) finished third and fourth, respectively. In other events at the meet, Adrian Swart placed fifth in the Men’s 400m (45.68), Karabo More took third in the Women’s 1500m (4:06.01), and Aviwe Hoboloshe finished 11th in the Women’s 800m (2:05.35).
  • Turku, Finland: At the Paavo Nurmi Games, Abdurahman Karriem (10.22) and Bayanda Walaza (10.26) secured second and fourth places respectively in a 100m final won by Great Britain’s Romell Glave (10.16).
  • United States: At the USATF Lone Star Grand Prix in Texas, hurdles specialist John Adesola finished fourth in the Men’s 110m Hurdles, crossing the line in 13.38 seconds.

Technical Progress in the Field Events

In the vertical jumps, South Africa’s representatives built useful competitive momentum across multiple appearances.

High jumper Kristi Snyman competed twice in Greece. After placing fourth at the Filothei Women Gala in Athens with a clearance of 1.84m, she improved three days later to take victory at a subsequent domestic meet with a height of 1.86m. At the same meeting, Andre Olivier competed in the Men’s 100m, finishing in 11.08 seconds.

In the Men’s High Jump, Usaamah Vally demonstrated positive progression over a 48-hour period. After clearing 1.99m to finish fifth at the EAP XX Atletica 2000 Meeting in Italy, Vally successfully cleared the 2.00m mark in Slovenia two days later to finish fourth.

As the international calendar transitions into the peak phase of the season, these performances provide crucial benchmarks for South Africa’s elite contingent. While regional victories from Smit and Leotlela show strong individual form, the Diamond League encounters in Rome and Stockholm underscore the sharpening execution required at the absolute highest level. For athletes like Fourie and Sekgodiso, executing near-peak times in heavily stacked fields serves as vital preparation for the tactical demands of upcoming major championships.
