In a spirited series on home soil, the South Africa U19 women’s cricket team finalized their ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2025 preparations with a 2-1 series victory against the USA. The Junior Proteas showcased resilience, winning the first T20I by 27 runs and the second match with an emphatic seven-wicket triumph. However, the USA team denied a clean sweep, securing a nine-wicket win in the final encounter.

This three-match series was pivotal for South Africa’s preparations as they gear up for the global stage in Malaysia. With just eight days to go before their opening World Cup clash against rivals New Zealand, the team is already turning their focus to fine-tuning strategies and adapting to the conditions in Kuala Lumpur.

Busy Warm-Up Schedule Ahead

Upon arrival in Malaysia, the squad will immediately dive into warm-up matches. First, they face Ireland on Monday, January 13, at the Selangor Turf Club, followed by a crucial encounter against India at the YSD-UKM Cricket Oval on Wednesday, January 15. These matches will serve as the final testing ground for the team’s combinations and tactics before the tournament opener.

Captain Kayla Reyneke: Leading with Vision

Team captain Kayla Reyneke reflected on the series against the USA, expressing mixed emotions but emphasizing the valuable lessons gained.

“We’re a solid unit both on and off the field. These games taught us a lot, and we’re taking those lessons into the World Cup,” said Reyneke. “Our goal is to inspire young girls and show them the joy and dedication cricket demands. It’s a tough sport, but if you love it, you’ll work hard to succeed.”

Her words capture the essence of a team that sees its mission extending beyond the boundary ropes, aiming to leave a legacy for future generations of female cricketers.

Coach Devnarain Confident in Squad’s Readiness

Head coach Dinesha Devnarain, a stalwart of women’s cricket in South Africa, praised the team’s preparation and highlighted the wealth of experience within the squad.

“This group is unique, with eight players returning from the previous World Cup and several already exposed to senior cricket,” Devnarain noted. “The Women’s Pro Series has been instrumental in elevating the standard of our players, and I’m confident they will represent South Africa with pride.”

Devnarain’s 18-month roadmap has ensured a finely balanced squad, combining youth with experience, and she believes this blend will be critical as the team tackles the challenges ahead.

Capping Ceremony at Newlands

The team’s official send-off was marked by a special capping ceremony held at Newlands Stadium during the Proteas Men’s Test match against Pakistan. Themed “Capping Future Stars of the Game,” the event celebrated the culmination of months of preparation and the start of a new chapter for these young athletes.

A Packed Schedule Lies Ahead

The Junior Proteas face a rigorous schedule in Malaysia, beginning with group stage matches against New Zealand (January 18), Samoa (January 20), and Nigeria (January 22). Should they progress, the Super Six stage awaits from January 25 to 29, followed by the semifinals on January 31 and the final on February 2 at the Bayuemas Oval.

As the squad heads to Malaysia, South Africans will be watching with anticipation, hopeful that these talented young women will make history on the world stage.
