GLASGOW — The South African men’s 3×3 wheelchair basketball team opened their 2026 Commonwealth Games Pool B campaign with a hard-fought 15-9 defeat against host nation Scotland at SEC Hall 4 on Saturday morning.

Despite a gritty defensive effort and a brief lead midway through the match, the AmaWheelaBoys ultimately struggled to contain the dominant inside presence of Scotland’s Finlay Erskine, who accounted for the lion’s share of the home side’s points.

Early Resilience from Team SA

Scotland, buoyed by the vocal Glasgow crowd, wasted no time stamping their authority on the game, quickly jumping out to a 3-0 lead. However, South Africa demonstrated immense character to weather the early storm. Shane Williams and Xola Yalezo found their shooting rhythm, sinking crucial early baskets to claw the score back to a 3-3 deadlock with 7:50 remaining on the clock.

The momentum briefly swung in South Africa’s favour when impact substitute Simanga Mbhele entered the fray. Mbhele provided an immediate offensive spark, draining back-to-back one-point shots to give Team SA a slender 5-4 advantage with just under six and a half minutes left to play.

Erskine and Baines Take Control

The Scottish response was swift and clinical. Playmaker Tyler Baines orchestrated the host nation’s attack beautifully, racking up seven key assists and continually finding Erskine in dangerous scoring positions.

Erskine proved to be an unstoppable force in the paint, converting 11 of his 13 one-point attempts and pulling down nine rebounds. His offensive efficiency fuelled a decisive Scottish run, swinging the momentum back in their favour and opening up a commanding 12-7 lead with just over two minutes remaining.

Shooting Struggles from Beyond the Arc

In the closing stages, South Africa attempted to shoot their way back into contention from long range, but the outside shots failed to fall. The AmaWheelaBoys struggled with their two-point efficiency throughout the match, converting just one of their 11 attempts (9%) from beyond the arc.

Yalezo, who top-scored for South Africa with four points and added five rebounds, managed to drain a late two-pointer. However, Erskine responded yet again to close out the 15-9 victory for the hosts.

While the result was not the start Team SA had hoped for, their defensive resilience and early fightback highlighted the competitive spirit within the squad. Williams contributed three points and two assists to the effort, while Zakhele Shelembe worked hard on the glass and in distribution.

The AmaWheelaBoys will now regroup and look to refine their offensive execution as they prepare for their critical upcoming pool fixtures against Wales and Malaysia.
