HONG KONG — After years of heartbreak and near-misses, the South African men’s sevens team has finally conquered Kai Tak Stadium. On Sunday, the Blitzboks ended their long-standing Hong Kong Sevens drought by securing a sensational 35-7 victory over defending champions Argentina in the Cup Final.

In front of a record-breaking, raucous crowd of over 40,000 fans, South Africa delivered a masterclass in tactical kicking, suffocating defense, and clinical finishing. Having lost three previous finals at the prestigious event, the emotional weight of the victory was palpable as the final whistle blew.

The Blitzboks’ journey to the podium on Sunday was paved with grit. Earlier in the day, they overpowered a physical New Zealand side 26-14 in the semi-finals, establishing a commanding 21-0 lead before cruising into the final.

Against Los Pumas 7s—a team they had already ruthlessly shut out 38-0 during the pool stages—South Africa knew the stakes. Tristan Leyds set the tone early in the final, showing a clean pair of heels to open the scoring. While Argentina briefly leveled the match at 7-7 courtesy of a Santino Zangara try, the Blitzboks never lost their composure.

Veteran playmaker Selvyn Davids proved instrumental, crossing the whitewash to give his side a 14-7 advantage at the break.

The second half belonged entirely to the men in green and gold. Operating with a flawlessly executed kicking game, South Africa relentlessly pressured the Argentine defense. Ryan Oosthuizen capitalized on a loose ball to extend the lead, while a perfectly weighted dink from Leyds allowed Shilton van Wyk to collect and score under the posts. Davids added the final flourish, securing his brace and putting the game lightyears beyond Argentina’s reach.

“The pure emotion at the final whistle said it all,” a team spokesperson noted. “This is a tournament every sevens player dreams of winning, and to do it so emphatically against a world-class side like Argentina makes it even sweeter.”

This historic victory not only exorcises the demons of past Hong Kong campaigns but also firmly establishes the Blitzboks as the team to beat as the SVNS World Championship series continues.
